We also use the zero article with plural countable nouns, when we are speaking generally :
Football teams are invited to the football federation meeting.
other example :
The football teams are invited to the meeting. ( specific shareholders )

We use the difinite article in the following cases :
a. When we mention a word or idea for the second time :
While I was in Switzerland I visited a company which had designed an innovative kitchen
product.

The company was based just outside based and the product was called Kitchen Magician
( a for the first mention : the for the second )

b. When the speaker presumes that it is clear what he/she means :
There are four points on the agenda. ( There is only one agenda )
I'll leave the instruction next to computer. ( the listener knows which instructions )
The economy is in very poor shape at the moment.
( there is only one economy ).
